Body armour or as commonly referred to as "Bullet Proof Vest", provides protection against handguns and high velocity rifle fire. The different levels of protection are described in the universally accepted document from the USA Department of Justice: National Institute of Justice. NIJ.0101.04

Level II Protection against 9 mm and .357 Magnum.

Level IIIA Protection against .44 Magnum

HIGH VELOCITY RIFLES

Level III Protection against Ball ammunition for AK47, R1, R4 & R5

Level IV Protection against Armour Piercing (AP) ammunition

The SA Police Service decided, after doing research about the threat in the RSA, to use level II Vests and level III Plates.

The final decision to determine which vest to purchase depends on the style of vest, size and ballistic protection required.
